See You in the Fall

It’s as if someone flipped a switch: Suddenly it’s fall. I can see clearly now, what with the low humidity and theatrical lighting, though the rest of me hasn't caught up with the new season. It’s stuck in boggy August, or the tedium that is July. Naturally I’m inside. It’s somehow easier to enjoy a day like this by experiencing it at a remove, by looking at it through a window or an open doorway. This reminds me of Gertrude Stein’s observation that she liked a good view but preferred to sit with her back to it. Same idea as it’s better to journey than to arrive. Once you get there, then where do you go?
